As an avid art enthusiast, one of the most frustrating moments of my day is when someone, anyone, compliments my work and says "Oh, I wish I could draw" or "Man, I could never do that". The answer is almost always a resounding "no" or "once when I was younger", when I ask them if they have tried to. Well, I'm here to tell you that you can do anything. ANYBODY CAN BE AN ARTIST. All it takes is some faith, and a lot of hard work. Art is a complex skill that becomes easy once you learn it.
Not a single artist woke up one day and could magically paint like Van Gogh or sculpt like Michelangelo, not even those great artists, themselves. Every single one of us gets frustrated, paints over something, crumples a drawing into the trash, and maybe even burns it. Some days I literally can't draw a line. Is it super frustrating? Yes, but the point is... being an artist isn't a skill, it's following your heart and learning to fight through the doubts and utilize them to your advantage. They say that landscapes and objects are the easiest things to learn to draw, but for me, I seriously struggle with those. I would much rather execute a portrait or an animal than attempt to draw leaves on a tree. I found my niche but I will always keep developing my other skills, even if it is not my best work. Practice does not make perfect, but it can make things quite a bit easier. Whether you started by drawing on the walls as a child, or you picked up a brush at 63... there is something in it for everyone. It can be therapeutic, it can be joyful, it can be an escape, ART can truly be whatever you want it to be. So, jump on in... the water is warm. And, always remember, you are not alone.
